What is a content management system ?

A content management system is software that keeps stores of every piece of content on your Web site, in a database such as simple text, photos, music, video, documents, or just about anything you can think of.

A major advantage of using a content management system is that it requires no technical skill or knowledge to keep pages updated or add new pages.

There are basically 3 layers that make a content management system

1 – the database – this stores all the data for the web site and this information can be used in many different ways on the web site.

2 – the operational software – this part will handle all the data editing, saving searching etc…

3 – the design template – this parts will handle all aspects of how the data is displayed in the web pages.

This structure for a web site is important as now it is possible to can change any 1 of these layers without effecting the other 2 layers.

It is possible to add or change data, add more pages at any time and keep the same overall design.

It is possible to change the whole design of a web site without changing the data or pages in the web site.

It is possible to update the operational software to the latest version and keep all the data and design as the same.
